SDG #6: Clean water and sanitation
“With great technology comes great responsibility”
The European Technology Chamber (EUTECC) believes that technology obliges and should serve a greater good, hence our mission is to effectively use technology to solve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In our series, we are looking at all SDGs individually and today, we focus on SDG 6.
Goal #6: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all
Clean water is a basic human right. It can’t get any more basic than that. Yet, even in 2019, millions of people including children die every year from diseases associated with inadequate water supply, sanitation and hygiene.
In addition, water scarcity, poor water quality and inadequate sanitation negatively impact food security, livelihood choices and educational opportunities for poor families across the world. At the current time, more than 2 billion people are living with the risk of reduced access to freshwater resources and by 2050, at least one in four people is likely to live in a country affected by chronic or recurring shortages of fresh water. Also, drought in specific afflicts some of the world’s poorest countries, worsening hunger and malnutrition.
Hence, enabling access to clean drinking water and improving sanitation should be the first and essential goal to ensure the livelihood of all humans on this planet.
How can technology help to ensure this goal? The technologies are already there. We already can address the most urgent issues, eg. improving water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and minimizing release of hazardous chemicals and materials, as well as reducing untreated wastewater and substantially increasing recycling. We just need to implement these technologies in the right places, where they are needed the most.
