On 20th July 2022, the EU Tech Chamber (EUTECH) Africa Alliance held an informative Digital Talk on the topic “Impact Investment in Africa.”
The webinar’s open remarks were given by Sisay Dinku, Board Chair – Africa Alliance. Moderated by Svetlana Nyameyo, Coordinator of Africa Alliance EU Tech Chamber. Dr. Igor V. Gladkov– Director – Energy Alliance, gave a brief introduction of EU Tech Chamber.
Indulging into the discussion, panelist Amne Suedi 🇹🇿🇰🇪🇺🇬🇷🇼🇧🇮🇨🇩🇸🇸🇨🇭, Director of Shikana Group Africa, presented the risks related to impact investment in Africa. “Investors obviously wish to establish long term involvement with the governments, they are investing in,” she said while explaining the risk factors such as political risk, regulatory risk, currency risk, social risk, environmental risk, and counter party risk associated with investing in Africa.
In addition to risks to impact investment in Africa, Amne Suedi 🇹🇿🇰🇪🇺🇬🇷🇼🇧🇮🇨🇩🇸🇸🇨🇭 also explained the solution and deal structuring to mitigate these risks. “What I have seen is that it’s not going to work for investors that they are nearly just sitting in UK or France or wherever they are a kind of expecting that their investment is going to be controlled with a remote control. It’s not going to work that way. You really need to be on the ground, and you also need to cultivate the trust with investee.” She spoke.
While panelist Salum Awadh, CGIA, CEO – SSC Capital, Mbadala Impact Fund (Tanzania) presented the authentic data about the investment in different regions of Africa in 2021. Salum talked about the key challenges to impact investment in Africa. “One of the major challenges is the limited knowledge and capacity to build such ventures that could attract the impact investors.”
The webinar concluded with the distribution of tree certificates to the webinar’s panelists by Jörg Tuchen ,CEO – Go.Blue.Now, appreciating their active participation.
