On Wednesday 13th July 2022, the EU Tech Chamber (EUTECH) Climate Action Alliance held a successful digital panel on the topic, “Can Europe Survive Painlessly without Russian Fossil Fuels?”
Moderated by Marcin Kiełt, Director of Climate Action Commission, the webinar examined how Europe is facing a daunting task in which the only right option is to become independent of fossil fuels from Russia in order to create long-term security.
Indulging into the topic Svitlana Romanko revealed the current stance of Ukraine amid war. “The war in my country, in Ukraine, as we all know has already been going on for 140 days. These wars obviously were funded and fueled by coal, oil and gas industries that also drives the climate crisis. We have also seen a lot of hypocrisy and manipulation of fossil fuel companies, who doubled down or tripled down on the profits only during the first quarters of the year.”
While Frederic Chandezon, discussed about the ongoing initiatives on renewable (solar) fuels and chemicals for meeting the EU climate strategy and energy independence while highlighting the grave issue of carbon emissions. “There is no big news that global warming is occurring presently. At the moment, global temperature has increased by +1.07 Celsius degree compared to the baseline period (1850-1900). Global Co2 emissions, which is one of the key numbers, have been picking in 2018. This is the major source of global warming, a global issue we are all facing. And the Paris Agreement calls for technology, that could be neutral or even negative in terms of Co2 emission.”
Lastly, Maciej Miniszewski emphasized that the question, can Europe Survive Painlessly without Russian Fossil Fuels? is not an adequate question for the region already suffering. “We are already in pain; we can say that the question is not about how to make it painlessly but effectively… We should replace Russian fossil fuel as soon as possible,” he said.
Answering several questions, the webinar unbridled that the EU has the potential to move away from fossil fuel imports from Russia, but this will require energy solidarity between EU countries.
