Twenty years ago, eleven membership states of the European Union, introduced the EURO as their new common currency. Today, it is an accepted means of payment in nineteen states and for more than 340 million people and the second most used currency in the world. But which specific challenges is the EURO about to face in a rapidly digitalizing world? Will even the considerations about a possible issuance of a digital EURO, as published in a report by the Eurosystem in October 2020 come into effect? Our invited panelists will share their views on how to increase the robustness of the EURO within the context of changing framework conditions like economic development, inflation and digitalization.
