Organic agriculture is widely considered to be a far more sustainable alternative when it comes to food production. It aims to produce food while establishing an ecological balance to prevent soil fertility or pest problems.
To address this topic, the EU Tech Chamber (EUTECH) Food, Farming and Fisheries Alliance organised a webinar on October 28, 2022. The topic under discussion was, “Achieving Ecology and Quality through Organic Agriculture”.
The webinar started off with a short overview of the organization and a formal introduction of the three panelists by our moderator, Dr. Igor V. Gladkov who is also the Director of the Food, Farming and Fisheries Alliance.
The webinar started off with our first panelist, Mr. Gai Fox, Aquaculture and Fisheries Expert at Naturland, Germany. Second in line was Dr. Ikechi Agbugba, PhD, an agribusiness activist and researcher, then, we had Mr. Thomas Rieger, CEO at Solarkiosk Solutions, Germany.
The fourth speaker of the day was Mr. Titus GAKWAYA from Agro-Technology & Engineering Ltd, Rwanda. Finally, the last speaker of the day was Ms. Olawumi Benedict, an organic farmer and advocate at Grow West Africa, Ghana.
While addressing the webinar, the speakers talked about organic agriculture and fish farming which contributes to the enhancement of sustainability. They further emphasized on the importance of healthy use of soil, water, and air as well as minimization of all forms of pollution that may result from agricultural practices.
Furthermore, the panelists also discussed the significance of integrating animal husbandry into crop producing farms. Integrating animals into a farm help creating a closed or semi-closed system where energy and nutrients are recycled.
Some of the key farm components discussed in the webinar were: soil analysis, climate, farm characteristics, presence of animal housing systems, organic matter sources, and limiting factors like capital, labour, etc.
We want to thank our experienced speakers for their informed insights on this. Moreover, special thanks to Dr. Igor Gladkov for moderating the webinar and distributing Tree-Certificates to the panelists.
Above all, sincere thanks to all our attendees – your comments, compliments, and questions. Stay tuned for our next Food, Farming and Fisheries Alliance webinar on December 16, 2022, at 9:00 am (CEST), about “Sustainability and Recovery of Agriculture and Fish Stocks”
